Every summer, thousands of college interns embark on internships all over the country and world.
The intern subculture can be found in any major city any summer. The internships themselves are
notorious for being relentless and requiring long hours of work with often no pay. When I got to college, I
was asked what I was doing in the summer as early as October.
But why do so many bright, young adults voluntarily work long hours for no pay? Why are students
judged by who they are working for for 8 weeks maximum? Are the internships really as demanding as
articles report? By interviewing recent interns in different cities, and doing some research on media
coverage of the topic, I hope to offer an inside perspective on the underground intern.
